Ana, a young member of Forjar Oportunidades, a program of the Sidoc Foundation, reflects on what the word change means to her.
Ana is a 26 year old young woman, she has many dreams but, when asked about her individual goal, she can only think collectively, her greatest desire is to have a youth house to provide second chances. Ana knows that in order to achieve these dreams many things must begin to change, both in her life and in the dynamics of the city and the region.
Ana's life, since three months ago, has begun to take turns, some unexpected and others come loaded with many illusions and with them a light of hope that makes her feel that a real change is being forged. Today, Ana is a member of the Forging Opportunities program of the Sidoc Foundation, like her 46 other people are territorial liaisons of the program and facilitate the dialogue and mediation with the 5000 young people who will benefit from the methodology.
"Change is the opportunities that young people seek and we all need them to emerge, for example, to be able to be a professional in Colombia without so many barriers, that would be a great change". In this sentence, Ana captures what change is for her but, at the same time, her words are a compendium of what many young people conceive as its meaning and is a reflection of what they have been demanding in the National Strike demonstrations.
In Ana's words, throughout the country there has always been a culture of easy money and it is easier to access it illegally: "the 'money' is easy to get, but young people do not want that life, we are tired of it, that's why we are looking for opportunities".
She, who shares daily with the young people of the resistance points, has been able to gather some impressions and highlights the importance of initiatives such as Forging Opportunities that give relevance to the role of youth in the development of the regions: "we have never seen alliances between entrepreneurs and citizens for the good of young people as is happening today with Compromiso Valle and all its work axes. Seeing how we are integrating is very nice and is a sign of what can become a real change for our lives.
Like Ana, several young people thank the entrepreneurs and all the people behind Forjar Oportunidades, as they agree that breaking down stigmas is a first step to work collectively for a real change: "they are believing in the young people that many branded as 'vandals' at some point and that is precisely where the change begins, because of the hope and the opportunities provided".
With water in her eyes and making a great effort to keep the tears from flowing, Ana describes Forjar Oportunidades as a house full of light that illuminates a new path full of changes because, in a seemingly simple phrase, working in the program gave her back something invaluable: "with Forjar Oportunidades I dreamed again, I believed in myself again".
