The Sidoc Foundation is part of the Compromiso Valle alliance through the Forjar Oportunidades initiative, which aims to generate opportunities and reduce vulnerability in order to contribute to the reduction of violence. It is expected to positively impact 5,000 young people directly in Cali, Buenaventura, Buga, Candelaria, Jamundí, Palmira and Yumbo, and indirectly approximately 15,000 people.
InValle del Cauca, right now, doors are opening that will allow transforming life projects. This through Compromiso Valle, a strategy that emerged after the demonstrations and blockades in the framework of the national strike, and which was the result of a process of active listening and collective construction.
There, businessmen, foundations and citizens joined forces to contribute to the social transformation of the region, to the creation of scenarios to improve the quality of life and the construction of better opportunities for young people and vulnerable population of the department.
The Sidoc Foundation is part of this alliance, which provided the Forging Opportunities initiative with a methodology for social intervention against violence that, with a multidimensional approach, comprehensively accompanies the population through a psychosocial route, training for employability and entrepreneurship, and training in the exercise of democratic and participatory citizenship. This methodology, which has a significant track record of success, is also based on the mainstreaming of the restorative and gender axis in terms of human rights.
Christine Armitage Tello, executive director of the Sidoc Foundation, explains: "Forging Opportunities is a methodology that brings together many years of intervention in the most vulnerable and violent areas of the city of Cali. This is intended to provide opportunities for people living in these contexts to have positive life projects that are focused on legality".
At the same time, he affirms that "Compromiso Valle is a unique opportunity, because there are methodologies that we at Fundación Sidoc have been implementing and strengthening, and after all the difficulties experienced during the national strike, we found the desire of the business sector to support them".
And he states that for the Foundation "this project is based on two clear and concrete objectives or rather two big dreams: The first is to give the opportunity to 5000 young people, their families and the surrounding communities, to transform their life projects and to see the possibility in legality to make and have a decent life. And the second is to demonstrate to all the entrepreneurs who are betting on Compromiso Valle that this is economically attractive, that it is worthwhile and that it is socially logical and necessary for them to be involved on a daily basis with the development of social capital in the region".
Finally, the executive director of the Sidoc Foundation adds that "this program is a good example of how to build peace in the territories and can serve as a model at the national and global level".
More about the initiative
Forher part, Rocío Gutiérrez Cely, director of the Forging Opportunities program, hopes that with all that is being worked on "the department of Valle del Cauca and Colombia will perceive in the young and vulnerable population an immense potential for building a country".
In addition, Rocío assures that they are working so that "Forging Opportunities becomes a bridge of articulation and encounter between young people and entrepreneurs".
For this reason, he said to young people: "We must raise our voices, but we must find mechanisms to make that voice resound in a proactive way, mechanisms that allow us to transform the reality of their lives and those around them. Young people today have an immense opportunity, since channels are opening up and we must take advantage of them to show that there is indeed a genuine interest in transforming social reality".
And with regard to entrepreneurs, Rocío says "thank you for joining us in the possibility of thinking of a much more equitable, fair and inclusive society. Your contribution is fundamental to build a country".
